Abstract

Today's nation-states face a number of challenges, notably the development of a globalised trade in goods, services, capital and information that transcends borders, and the emergence of new powers that seek to challenge the economic leadership of the United States. In this multipolar world, nation states seek to preserve their culture and identity in the face of cosmopolitanism and multiculturalism that could undermine their sovereignty, even if they are not hostile to economic exchange.
