Power and the politics of language

This contribution examines the impact of power and politics on language planning and policy, with a particular focus on how language policy is shaped within governmental processes—especially during the agenda-setting stage. The approach aims to offer a comprehensive perspective on how power and language politics are conceptualized within the broader field of language planning and policy. This is followed by an analysis of selected applications related to agenda-setting in language policy processes. The paper concludes by addressing the challenges and constraints associated with applying notions of power and language politics to the agenda-setting phase in policymaking, along with offering recommendations for further reading
