Abstract

The aim of this study is to present the role of the school in promoting the concept of community service and to clarify the concept and objectives of social service among the administration, teachers and secondary school students at the Makassed Islamic Charitable Association in Beirut. It also aims to identify the skills acquired by secondary school students through the application of the social work at school, identify the tools or methods used by the school administration to implement and enhance the concept of social service, and identify the difficulties and obstacles encountered by the school administration in the application of social service. Based on the nature of the study and the objectives it seeks to achieve, two techniques were used to apply the descriptive analytical approach. These include a questionnaire directed to both secondary school students (180 students) and teachers (47 Teachers), and individual interviews with the focus group consisting of the school principal, the head of the secondary section, the head of the volunteering unit in the secondary stage, and the parents of students (5 parents) who practiced in social service. Our results show that there is a statistically significant effect for the role of the school in consolidating the concept of social service along with the goals and skills acquired from this program from the points of view of secondary school students and teachers. Moreover, there is a statistically significant effect between the practice of social work and the degree of awareness of its concept from the point of view of students in the secondary stage. Importantly, there is a statistically significant relationship between the role of school administration in the application of the social work program and the goals or skills acquired from the social service program on one hand, and the practice of social work on the other hand. There is a significant effect of the study variables (gender, students’ community service activities, number of community service hours that were implemented) on the average rates of students’ awareness of the concept of social service however, there is no influence of the class variable on the average rates of the students’ awareness of the concept of social service
