The semeiotic of Jerusalem in the epistemological structures of Jerusalemite identity

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the policies of the Zionist occupation in occupied Jerusalem to obliterate the symbols of the Jerusalemite identity and to identify the strategies of steadfastness that Palestinians have developed to face these policies. The study adopted the semeiotic approach to analyze data by using qualitative research tools and the study interviewed 90 individuals from 15 extended families distributed in Jerusalem and its environs. The results of this study has shown a high awareness from the Palestinian about the policies of the Zionist occupation in occupied Jerusalem and the intensification of the publicity of economic and architectural signs and symbols that are characterized by a false religious and historical character with the aim of exclusion and uprooting of the Palestinians. The results highlighted the importance of the role of the family and economic and educational support to consolidate their steadfastness and revive the Kingdom of Jerusalem signs, whether urban, historical or religious. The results highlighted the importance of the city and its marks extending to five thousand years BC in the formation of the Palestinian epistemological identity
