Using Social Media on Family Relationships and Citizenship Values from Al-Istiqlal University Students’ Point of View

This study aimed to explore the effect of using social media on family relationships and citizenship values from Al-Istiqlal University students’ point of view. Descriptive approach has been used to achieve the goal of the study. The researchers have prepared a questionnaire that included two axes, the first consists of (36) items related to the impact of using social media on family relations, and the second axis consist of (11) items related to the values of citizenship. The study tool has been applied to a sample of (254) students from Al-Istiqlal University who have been chosen randomly. The most important result of the study is that using social media sites of Al-Istiqlal University students’ affects family relationships and citizenship values with a moderate degree. The result also shows that there are no statistically significant differences at the level of significance (α ≤ 0.05) of the impact of using the social media sites on family relations from the students' point of view due to the gender variable, and the place of residence. Whereas there are differences due to the college variable and in favor of the College of Law and Police Sciences. The study proposes a set of recommendations, the most important of which is the necessity of enhancing the role of educational institutions in raising awareness to reduce the risks of social networking sites, in addition to holding training courses for university students to develop their skills in employing social networking sites in the service of community issue
