Impact of Social Media in Strenghening the National Identity among An-Najah National University Students in Palestine

The study aimed at identifying the impact of social media in strengthening the national identity among An-Najah National University students in Palestine. The researchers used the convenient sample which consisted of 200 of An-Najah University students. The analytical descriptive approach was used through the questionnaire tool. The results concluded that the majority of the respondents use social media sites for more than 3 hours a day, and that the majority of them follow facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and that political, social, and entertainment topics were followed by them at a high level. The degree of respondents' interaction with national issues was also high, with the exception of “share” and “comment”, which were medium. The results showed that the respondents believe that the issues of Jerusalem and the daily events related to the Israeli military actions in the Palestinian territories got a high degree. As for the role of social media in strengthening national identity, it was high. The respondents considered that the challenges facing the role of social media in strengthening national identity were high, whether the absence of privacy, censorship imposed by the Israelis and the Palestinian Authority, restrictions of the social media companies on Palestinian content
